3 July 2009: this site contains more than
4,500
photos
of 1,207 bird species in the wild; 576 of these are on the main
Australian
list (Christidis
& Boles, 2008). Click on one of the
following to scroll down to: 22 June 2009: Important!
Ian has reorganized the regional indices
to match the structure of the family thumbnails as follows: 17 May 2009: Musk Lorikeet
is the 1,200th species to be included in the website. 23 March 2009: The website revision to conform with the
taxonomy of Birdlife
International and Christidis
& Boles, 2008, is now finished, apart from
some lose ends.
The two taxonomies
differ in some respects (allocation of species to genera and families
and sequence of species) and these differences between the Australian
and Non-Australian family thumbnails are documented. There are now 136 families represented in the website.
Next and Previous Family buttons are provided in all the top level
family indices to permit navigation through all the galleries in the
Birdlife International family sequence. Ian now
encourages free use of images on personal and conservation-related
websites in exchange
for links. The photos in this site
are from high-resolution originals suitable for printing (unless
qualified with the comment 'for the record' or 'poor image quality')
with a minimum length of 1,200 pixels along the longest side. Contact Ian about
fees for publication or commercial use of photos (see section on image purchases). Photographs are
organized by geographical regions - where the species occur rather than
where the photos were taken. The main emphasis is on birds which occur
in Australia but there are also alphabetic indices and
family thumbnails to Asian, European and North
and South American
Birds. You can browse the list of galleries in each section.

To minimize disruption to the existing structure, this means that
buttons have been renamed and some webpages have been redirected. If
you get odd combinations such as the label "Asian Birds" on the Global
Index page, refreshing the page should fix this. If you find any
persistent problems, please advise
Ian.
